- June 2009
There is a stretch along Interstate 10 --
as it passes through the Mohave Desert near the city of Desert
Hot Springs, California
-- that is one of the windiest places on earth.
As we drove that way often in our time in
the desert, we learned where we had to grip the steering wheel a little more
firmly, because the wind wanted to grab our little Prius and take it places we
didn't intend to go. On a couple
occasions, trailers tipped over and stalled traffic. If you ventured outside the car for any
reason, you got a dusty facial and a new hair-do.
The state of California has invested heavily in that
wind. There are literally thousands of
windmills working with those strong winds to bring power to homes and
businesses in the state. 1.5% of the state's energy now comes from those
windmills, with many more planned for construction.
This gives me a new image to consider as I
read the Pentecost story this year. According
to Acts, chapter 2, the disciples, still contemplating the unbelievable events
of Holy Week and the weeks after, gathered together. "And suddenly from heaven there came a sound
like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house..." (Acts 2: 2)
That was the sound of God's power flowing
mightily into that little band of believers, and it changed them
completely. And they changed the world completely, carrying forward that message of
God's love, and salvation through Jesus Christ.
Indeed, once that wind of the Holy Spirit had blown, there seemed to be
no obstacle stubborn or strong enough to stop the flow of God's love into the
world.
What a combination! God's Spirit, and a band of willing
disciples. Nothing can stop that team. We sometimes take more notice of the
challenges before us - spiritual, financial, physical, relational - on and on
its goes. They are there; they are
pressing; they are real.
But the mighty wind of Pentecost has
always proven stronger. And here at
Cicero UMC, despite the inevitable challenges before us, the Spirit is moving,
and we are invited to be part of that winning formula - God's Spirit, and
willing disciples.
One day, Sharon and I took a tour of the
windmill farms, and one of the things we learned is that the newer ones are
programmed to turn automatically into the wind, to find the maximum power
available.
Again, isn't this a great image for our
spiritual lives - we turn into God's Spirit, and find the best position to receive
God's loving power.
Whether this is a time when you feel
powerful, or feel overwhelmed by life's burdens - Pentecost is a time to turn
into the wind of God's loving Spirit, and experience the healing and
transforming power that God is sending your way.
During this season of recognizing God's
power blowing into the Church, let's encourage and strengthen one another,
reminding each other again and again of the source of our power.
Turn into the Wind - God has great plans
for you!

Christ, Everett

THREE
WORK TEAMS SET TO GO!
Cicero UMC is involved in three mission work teams
traveling to three parts of the world a month from now.
Two are sponsored by CUMC.
A mixed adult and youth team of about
13 people are returning to Sabine Pass , Texas , June 27 - July 4, led by "Commander" Brenda Chewning-Kulick,
to continue hurricane recovery projects through Sabine Pass
United Methodist
Church . A
special offering will be received Sunday, June 21 to help meet expenses of the
team on site. Each team member is covering his/her own expenses to
and from Texas
.
Twelve youth and adult leaders will
travel to Mingo County , West Virginia , July 4 - 12, to work on
homes of the economically disadvantaged. They work under the auspices of
Appalachia Service Project, a home repair/home building ministry with which our
United Methodist Church
is related. ASP veteran Amanda Coyle is our team leader. Ours joins
hundreds of other youth teams from all over the US
who each summer serve somewhere in Central Appalachia
.
The third team is sponsored by our
North Central NY Conference.
Two CUMC members-Pat Michael and Diane
Travers-are part of a team who will be working at an orphanage and on the
Mutambara Mission compound in the African country of Zimbabwe, July 4 - 19,
under the leadership of missionary Dr. Sylvia Reimer of Watertown, NY.
Drs. Marvin and Sylvia Reimer served a 3 year term as medical missionaries at Mutambara Mission Hospital
in the early 2000s. Sylvia says, "many teams going to Zimbabwe have canceled in the past
few months, so our ministry of presence will be exceptionally meaningful."
On Sunday, June 14, members of the
CUMC work teams will be commissioned for their tasks during both worship
services.
Spaghetti
Dinner
Saturday, June 13 at 4:00 PM until all
are served. Tickets will be sold after

Discipleship Classes starting

We will be starting a series of new

For those
who have already done "The Journey", these other classes will be announced in
the weeks ahead.
Watch for more information!
News From
Brown Memorial UMC and Syracuse Westside Urban Mission.
June 25, 2009 will be a day of celebration. All tutors, children, parents
and interested persons are invited to attend a pot luck dinner at Brown
Memorial UMC to celebrate a year of our very successful tutoring program.
The dinner will be held at 6:00PM the same time Tutoring is usually held.
Certificates of Achievement and Appreciation will
be presented. This should be a great evening.
Now on to the summer.
The Terrific T's will begin July 7, 2009 and will be held every Tuesday and
Thursday for 8 weeks, the hours are from 11:00 AM to 3:00PM. The theme is
Children around the World. We will be learning about food, dress,
customs, and worship of children in eight different countries from around the
world. August 12, 13 &14 will be special days, because Dayton Edmonds
a Nationally recognized story teller will be here
to share with children of all ages. The primary purpose for the program
is to mostly have fun, feed the kids, and a safe fun activity for children K -
16 during the summer.
We needed volunteers for this program. This is a more laid back program,
than the tutoring. We start at 11:00 AM and finish at 3:00. We have
times of game playing, crafts, movies and lessons on our countries. We
will also have a Bible story for each day.
Volunteers can be used on a one day or one hour basis. We will need help
with cooking lunch and snacks each day.
The first summer we did this program we told Bishop Fisher that we were not
going to learn anything for the whole summer. To our surprise she said
"good children need to learn to play." However we learned alot
during that first summer. We learned that we liked to play games, we
loved making crafts, and we just liked being together in a safe
environment. Out of this very first summer grew the tutoring
program, and the miracles keep on happening.
